The peregrine falcons at Ely Cathedral have become a beloved and awe-inspiring feature of the city’s skyline, capturing the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts and casual observers alike.
A Sky-High Beginning
These majestic birds first made their home on the cathedral's towering ledges in 2019, and by 2020, they had successfully raised two chicks. The following year marked a milestone, as four chicks hatched in 2021, with their every movement broadcast live via a webcam set up by the Hawk and Owl Trust, generously supported by King’s Ely.
Despite a specially installed nesting box on the West Tower, the falcons chose the South Transept roof for their nesting site due to urgent repair work, prompting quick adjustments in camera placement to keep up with the action.
Connecting People with Wildlife
The webcam livestream has sparked worldwide interest, allowing people to witness the peregrines' nesting journey in real-time. Ely Cathedral, in partnership with the Hawk and Owl Trust, has embraced its role in this unique conservation effort. Educational trails and community events have been hosted to further encourage local involvement and raise awareness about protecting urban wildlife.
A Dramatic Turn of Events
In 2022, the story took an unexpected twist when a new female displaced the original nesting falcon. What followed was a period of territorial instability, with multiple falcons vying for control—yet none establishing dominance. This uncertain pattern continued through 2023 and 2024, with only brief peregrine sightings and no resident pair.
A New Chapter in 2025
Hope returned in early 2025 when a new pair finally settled at the cathedral. In a thrilling development:
- First egg laid on 19th April
- Second egg followed on 21st April
- Third egg appeared on 24th April
The new nesting pair marks a fresh start for the peregrine legacy at Ely.
