Hawk and Owl Trust Projects

Conserving Birds of Prey and their Habitats

Picture1This week we have had a busy time at the watchpoint, the weather has been lovely and we have spoken to lots of people. Being half term this week we have had fun with some Peregrine themed activities.

The chicks are both growing rapidly and look different day by day. At one month old their wing tips are very prominent and they are beginning to stretch their wings out. The adults are leaving the chicks for longer periods of time and seem to be feeding mostly first thing then again late afternoon. They are becoming inquisitive and looking over the edge of the platform and trying to feed themselves when prey is brought in for them. We expect they could fledge from 9th June onwards.

On Thursday a third Peregrine flew quite close to the platform. The Female was already with the chicks and the Male quickly joined them. They could be seen and heard warning the intruder and then flew after it to scare it off. This is the fourth time a Peregrine has been seen around the Cathedral. We are unsure if it is the same one or different each time. This could be a young Peregrine looking to find their own nest site. None of them have put up much of a fight and left after the adult pair warned them off.

Next week we are open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10-4. On Wednesday Hawke Optics will be at the Watchpoint to showcase their range of products and chat to you about all things binoculars and telescopes.
