This week unfortunately started off on a sad note, the third smaller chick was not doing too well. The chick was not getting enough food, and with the hot weather the chick was very weak. We noticed its reduced movements and while we were hoping it would pull through, sadly the chick died on 13/05/25. While this was difficult to watch, it is not unusual for young chicks to die before reaching fledging age, it is the harsh reality of how difficult getting through the first year of a Peregrine's life is. We are hopeful that the remaining two chicks will continue to grow and make it to fledging. They are getting fed regularly and both seem to be growing at a similar rate, you can already see the tips of their wing feathers developing. The chicks are becoming more mobile, and moving around the box more. It has been exciting to watch as they develop and change day by day.
This week we have seen a lot of activity around the spire with both the male and female spending lots of time in the air, circling the spire and warning off Gulls, Buzzards and another Peregrine. This is the fourth sighting of a Peregrine in the last two weeks. It may be that this is a juvenile Peregrine that is looking for territory of its own. It soon gets chased off by the pair as they defend themselves from the intruder.
We have had a lovely week chatting to so many visitors and residents of Norwich and are looking forward to following the chick's progress from the grounds of the Cathedral. This week the Watchpoint is open Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd 10-4.
